Destinations / North America / United States / Utah / Add This to Your Adventure List- Hiking the Narrows in Zion National Park in the Winter

Zion National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the United States; with dramatic red rock cliffs and sandstone canyons it’s no surprise that Utah’s first national park attracts millions of visitors every year. After my first visit 12 years ago I too fell under Zion’s spell and to this day it remains one of my favorite national parks. Hiking the Narrows was my favorite experience from that July trip over a decade ago and when I was invited to visit Zion for a winter trip with Travel Mindset as a part of #InstameetStGeorge I was beyond excited. Even as someone who had hiked the Narrows before I was curious to see how hiking the Narrows in the winter compared to my previous summertime experience.

American

I traveled to Zion National Park as part of a campaign with Travel Mindset and Visit St. George. As always, all opinions are my own. With air temperatures around 50 degrees and water temperature a brisk 38 degrees layering is key to staying comfortable during your Narrows hike. In addition to special gear (more on that in a minute) I wore fleece leggings, a long sleeved running shirt and a thin down jacket. I also had a hat and fleece gloves, so if you’re cold-natured like me make sure you come prepared.

Being that the hike is in cold water staying warm and dry is extremely important your first stop of the day should be at Zion Adventure Company in Springdale to get properly geared up. We went with the Full Drysuit Package, which for $55 included a Gortex drysuit, neoprene socks, special canyon shoes and a hiking stick. There was also a quick video with instructions for putting on your gear as well as tips for your time in the Narrows. Zion Adventure Company also stocks dry bags, camera/phone bags, clothing (you can rent fleece layers if what you have on isn’t warm enough), and snacks, basically anything you need for your adventures in Zion National Park.

After you enter Zion National Park you should park at Zion Canyon Visitor Center. From the Visitor Center take the park shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava (stop 9), which will take about 40 minutes. On the day I visited shuttles started running at 7am and the last shuttle departed the Temple of Sinawava at 6:45pm, be sure to check the website for Zion National Park for the most up to date information for the day of your visit. From the shuttle drop off point there is an easy 20 minute stroll down the Riverside Walk, which is paved and fairly flat, to get to the Gateway of the Narrows. We were advised to partially gear up at the shuttle stop then complete dressing out right before we got in the water to avoid overheating on the Riverside Walk.

Add This To Your Adventure List Hiking The Narrows In Zion National Park In The Winter

There are two options for hiking the Narrows, the Bottom Up Day Hike (an out and back hike that our group did), or the Top-Down Thru-Hike which requires a special permit and will take at least 12 hours. For the Bottom-Up Day Hike once you pass the Gateway of the Narrows 95% of the hike will be in the Virgin River. Now as someone who hates having cold, wet feet I was concerned at how I was going to fare over the next 4 hours of hiking but those fears were largely unfounded as the neoprene socks did a great job of keeping my feet warm (like diving booties your feet will get wet) and from the ankles up the drysuit kept me dry and downright toasty. The water got as deep as mid-thigh on me ( compared to waist high during my summer trip) and the drysuit did a fantastic job of keeping me well, dry. The hiking stick was also extremely helpful while navigating the uneven and sometimes slippery riverbed.

Navigating the canyon is fairly easy to do on a self guided hike, with the exception of a fork at the beginning of Wall Street (a dramatic slot canyon that is only 22 feet wide with walls reaching a height of 1, 500 feet) there is really only one way to go. At the fork you will keep left to continue to Wall Street toward Big Springs, a right will take you through Orderville Canyon toward Veiled Falls.

-

I hiked up to the start of Wall Street and it took me about 2 hours going at a leisurely pace and stopping to take plenty of pictures along the way as well as a quick snack break. The sheer sandstone walls provided a dramatic contrast against the blue-gray Virgin River and was just as beautiful as I remembered.

Ausable Chasm: A Winter Exploration

So how does hiking the Narrows in the winter compare to hiking in the summer? Much to my surprise I actually preferred my hike in February over my hike in July largely due to the lack of crowds. Come summer both the crowds and temperatures soar. Zion has become one of the most visited national parks and logged in over 500, 000 visitors for July 2017 with many of them looking to hike part of the Narrows. Conversely Zion only saw about 100, 000 visitors for January 2018, making winter a prime time to visit without the crowds. In addition to our group of 30 I only saw about 20 other people hiking the Narrows for our visit during Presidents’ Day Weekend. That means our group had one of the most famous hikes in one of the most popular national parks largely to ourselves. I’ve also been lucky to be able to hike the Narrows both times I’ve visited, though I’ve heard from a few friends who have visited in the late spring and summer who were unable to hike as the canyon was closed due to dangerously high water levels from snow melt or the threat of flash flooding.

If you will primarily be focusing on Zion National Park during your trip staying in Springdale is your best bet, fuel up for your adventures at Deep Creek Coffee Co.  or unwind at Oscar’s Cafe at the end of the day. If you are exploring some of the stunning state parks like Snow Canyon State Park or Red Cliffs Desert Reserve then it’s best to base yourself in St. George and make sure to grab breakfast at the Bear Paw Cafe.American Fork Canyon Nature Trail is also called Swinging Bridge because the trail connects with the Swinging Bridge picnic area. Plus there are bridges on both ends of this hike.

On a Friday after school in January, we decided to hike the American Fork Canyon Nature Trail. It’s only a half-mile roundtrip, and since it was getting toward 4 o’clock, we needed to keep it short (see our Tips for Winter Hiking). This is also our fourth hike in our 52 Hike Challenge this year.

Things To Do In Alta And Snowbird Utah

It had snowed over an inch earlier in the day, so we were the first people on the trail. We were able to follow the trail just fine, but we were blazing our way through 6-8 inches of snow, which was actually really fun. This hike is a gentle uphill out-and-back trail, and it is beautiful in the winter. The trail walks in and out of trees, and offers beautiful views of the mountains.

We love the American Fork Canyon Nature Trail for a few reasons. One: it is so short. Most people can hike this trail since it is only 0.5 mile roundtrip. Two: there are interpretive signs along the way, and we love to learn more about the canyon and the trees and animals that live there. Three: The trail is paved. Even though that doesn’t help in the winter, in the warmer months, you can push a stroller or wheelchair. And Four: there are bridges at the beginning and end. Our boys love crossing the river, and it makes the hike fun for them.

Best

We like to do this hike by parking at the lower lot near the bathroom (The Swinging Bridge Picnic Area) and hiking uphill. After winding through the snowy trees for a quarter mile, you drop down to the upper bridge, which crosses over to the upper parking area near Timpanogos Cave. From there, we simply turn around and walk back to the lower parking lot. You can also park near the upper bridge because there is a small pull out, but we like to park at the picnic area because there is a lot of parking, and bathrooms (even though they weren’t open in the winter).

Life Is Better Now How Por Fin Changed My Life For the Better

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a neurological condition that causes pain and other symptoms in your extremities — most commonly your hand. There are several treatment options for CRPS. The sooner you receive a diagnosis and treatment, the more likely your symptoms will improve.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a condition that causes pain, changes in skin color and other symptoms in a certain part of your body — usually in your extremities. Your extremities include your arm, leg, hand or foot.

The Monk From Harvard: Learn The Art Of Conversation With Self To Solve Your Problems: Verma, Abhishek: 9798739482860: Amazon.com: Books

Experts believe that CRPS occurs as a result of dysfunction in your central or peripheral nervous systems. Your central nervous system consists of your brain and spinal cord. Your peripheral nervous system relays information from your brain and spinal cord to your organs, arms, legs, fingers and toes. The abnormal functioning results in an overreaction to pain signals that your nervous system can’t shut off.

CRPS more commonly affects adults than children. The peak onset is around 40 years of age. CRPS affects people assigned female at birth more often than people assigned male at birth.

Symptoms of CRPS typically start within four to six weeks after an injury, fracture or surgery, but they can develop without a known cause.

David Brooks: The Nuclear Family Was A Mistake

The most common and prominent symptom of CRPS is pain. The pain is constant or intermittent and is a burning, stinging or tearing sensation. It’s often deep inside your affected limb.

Since the symptoms of CRPS usually improve over time, it’s easiest for healthcare providers to diagnose it in the early stages. It’s important to see a provider soon after you experience symptoms of CRPS.

Researchers aren’t sure why some people develop CRPS while others with similar injuries don’t. They think it’s due to an inflammatory or immune reaction in both your peripheral and central nervous systems.

Water Stress: A Global Problem That's Getting Worse

In more than 90% of cases, CRPS results from nerve trauma or injury to the affected limb that damages the thinnest sensory and autonomic nerve fibers. These small fibers transmit pain, itch and temperature sensations. They also control the small blood vessels and the overall health of surrounding cells.

The most common injury associated with developing CRPS is a bone fracture, especially a wrist fracture. A displaced or splintered bone or pressure from a tight cast can damage nerves.

There’s no specific test to diagnose CRPS. Healthcare providers mainly diagnose it through a careful medical history, physical examination and review of your symptoms. Your provider will ask you if you’ve had a recent injury or surgery.

Time Management: 10 Strategies For Better Time Management

They may order imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to look for underlying nerve damage. But it’s not always possible to find the nerve damage.

Your provider may also order other tests to rule out conditions that cause similar symptoms. For example, electroography (EMG) may reveal other causes of neuropathy, which may result in some similar pain scenarios.

The goal of treatment is to decrease your pain and other symptoms, restore function to the affected limb and maintain the quality of your life.

Improving Cancer Care In South East Asia: The Action Case Study

It’s important to start treatment early in the course of CRPS. This is because CRPS can cause the affected limb to stiffen over time. In addition, the pain usually worsens without treatment and movement becomes more and more difficult.

It’s best to see healthcare providers who have experience in treating CRPS, if possible. Treatment requires a combination of carefully managed approaches, including:

For young children with CRPS, psychosocial and rehabilitation therapies are the mainstay treatment. Healthcare providers typically only suggest pain-reducing medical procedures for older adolescents who have symptoms that aren’t responding to other therapies.

The

Phds: The Tortuous Truth

A physical therapist can help improve blood flow to your affected limb as well as increase your flexibility, strength, muscle tone and function with certain exercises. An occupational therapist can teach you new ways to accomplish everyday tasks.

Removing certain barriers that can prevent your nerves from healing can help increase the chance of recovery and the speed of recovery, including:

Having CRPS is associated with worsening anxiety, depression and stress, which can increase pain. Psychotherapy can help. Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, is a term for a variety of treatment techniques that aim to help a person identify and change unhealthy emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

What Is Change Management?

If possible, it’s best to see a pain management clinical psychologist with training in treating CRPS. During psychotherapy, you talk to the psychologist to learn ways to better cope with factors that contribute to your pain and other symptoms.

No medications are specifically approved for CRPS in the U.S. However, your healthcare provider may recommend certain medications to manage your symptoms.

If your CRPS hasn’t responded well to the therapies mentioned above or you have severe pain or ongoing CRPS, your provider may recommend the following more invasive treatments:

The Surprising Benefits Of Work/life Support

Since researchers don’t know the exact cause of CRPS, there’s no conclusive way to prevent it. Some studies have revealed that taking vitamin C before a future surgery might prevent CRPS.

Each person’s experience with CRPS is different. CRPS usually improves over time and eventually goes away (goes into remission) in most people.

The

Severe or prolonged cases, which are rare, can greatly affect your life. In some people, CRPS gets worse and even spreads to other areas of their body. Experiencing increased psychological distress during the injury that led to CRPS may affect its severity and prognosis.

Reduction In Life Expectancy In Brazil After Covid 19

The most important goals are to relieve pain and restore movement and strength in the affected limb. By achieving pain relief, you increase the odds of improving its function and your quality of life. Carefully selected treatment plans allow some people with CRPS to successfully manage their pain and lead active lives.

Because of the complexity of this condition and the fact that it’s often misdiagnosed, seek out a pain management specialist or a specialty pain center with knowledge of CRPS if:

In the United States, the Social Security Administration recognizes CRPS as a potential cause of disability depending on its severity and impact on your life. Consult government officials for more information on the Social Security Administration’s eligibility requirements.

The Best Decision: How Abortion Changed These Lives For The Better

No, CRPS isn’t a mental health condition. It’s a neurological condition. CRPS can, however, cause or worsen anxiety, depression and stress. It can sometimes lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) can greatly affect your quality of life. The good news is that there are many treatment options and many combinations of options that you can try. The earlier you receive a CRPS diagnosis and start treatment, the better the chance that your symptoms will respond to treatment. If you think you may have CRPS, talk to your healthcare provider. They’re available to help you.

Policy— was produced in 1907, marking the beginning of the global plastics industry. However, rapid growth in global plastic production was not realized until the 1950s. Over the next 70 years, annual production of plastics increased nearly 230-fold to 460 million tonnes in 2019.

World Development Report 2021: Data For Better Lives

To understand the magnitude of input of plastics to the natural environment and the world’s oceans, we must understand various elements of the plastic production, distribution and waste management chain. This is crucial, not only in understanding the scale of the problem but in implementing the most effective interventions for reduction.

Climate

In 1950 the world produced only 2 million tonnes per year. Since then, annual production has increased nearly 230-fold, reaching 460 million tonnes in 2019.

The short downturn in annual production in 2009 and 2010 was predominantly the result of the 2008 global financial crisis — a similar dent is seen across several metrics of resource production and consumption, including energy.

Small Business Statistics You Need To Know For 2023

The chart shows that by 2019, the world had produced 9.5 billion tonnes of plastic — more than one tonne of plastic for every person alive today.

How has global plastic waste disposal method changed over time? In the chart we see the share of global plastic waste that is discarded, recycled or incinerated from 1980 through to 2015.

Prior to 1980, recycling and incineration of plastic was negligible; 100 percent was therefore discarded. From 1980 for incineration, and 1990 for recycling, rates increased on average by about 0.7 percent per year.2

How Diversity Makes Us Smarter

If we extrapolate historical trends through to 2050— as can be seen in thechart here— by 2050, incineration rates would increase to 50 percent; recycling to 44 percent; and discarded waste would fall to 6 percent. However, note that this is based on the simplistic extrapolation of historic trends and does not represent concrete projections.

To which industries and product uses is primary plastic production allocated? In the chart we see plastic production allocation by sector for 2015.

Building and construction was the second largest sector utilizing 19 percent of the total. Primary plastic production does not directly reflect plastic waste generation (as shown in the next section), since this is also influenced by the polymer type and lifetime of the end product.
